All twelve signs, decoded

The zodiac is a band of sky about eight degrees either side of the ecliptic — the path the Sun appears to trace across the year. Babylonian astronomers divided that band into twelve equal thirty-degree slices in the first millennium BCE, naming each after the constellation then sitting in it. Greek astronomers inherited the scheme, and Ptolemy fixed it in writing in the second century CE. Your sign is simply the slice the Sun occupied on the day you were born.

One detail causes most of the confusion people arrive with. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the equinoxes rather than to the stars. Because the Earth wobbles on its axis over a roughly 26,000-year cycle, those slices have drifted away from the constellations that named them — so the Sun is no longer literally in Aries during Aries season. This is not an error that was overlooked; the tropical zodiac was always a seasonal framework, and the dates below reflect it. The other thing worth knowing early: your Sun sign is one placement out of many. It describes the core of how you express yourself. Your Moon sign covers your emotional interior and your rising sign covers the version of you that walks into a room. When a sign description feels only half right, the other half is usually in those two.

Nearly everything a sign does can be predicted from two properties, and learning them is far more useful than memorising twelve personality lists.

Element sets the temperament — what the sign runs on.

• Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — initiating, expressive, motivated by momentum.
• Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — practical, patient, motivated by results you can touch.
• Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — verbal, social, motivated by ideas and exchange.
• Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — feeling-led, absorbent, motivated by connection and depth.

Modality sets the timing — when in a cycle the sign operates. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) open a season and start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold the middle and sustain them. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) close a season and adapt.

Combine the two and you have the sign. Fixed water is Scorpio: feeling, held and concentrated. Mutable fire is Sagittarius: momentum, scattered wide. If you were born within a day or two of a date boundary — on "the cusp" — check both pages. Sign boundaries fall at a specific minute that shifts slightly year to year, so a birth on 22 or 23 August could be Leo or Virgo depending on the year and your birth time. Cusp is not a thirteenth sign; you are one or the other, and only an exact chart settles it.
