Zodiac Sign Dates

Almost every zodiac date list you will find is a rounded one, and the rounding is the reason two sources disagree about whether 23 August is Leo or Virgo.

Sign boundaries are not calendar events. A sign begins at the exact moment the Sun crosses a thirty-degree mark on the ecliptic, and that moment falls at a specific hour and minute, not at midnight. Because the Earth's orbit takes about 365.2422 days rather than 365, that moment drifts about six hours later each year and then jumps back when a leap day is inserted. Over a four-year cycle the boundary can land on either side of a calendar date.

So the practical rule is simple. If your birthday sits comfortably inside a range, the list is correct and nothing else matters. If it falls on the first or last day of a range, the list cannot answer the question — only the actual ingress time for your birth year can.

There is no thirteenth state. You are not "a Leo–Virgo": at the minute you were born the Sun was at a specific degree, and that degree was in exactly one sign. Cusp is a description of uncertainty about which, not a hybrid category.

What is true is that a Sun at the very start or end of a sign often behaves a little unlike the textbook version, and that people born near a boundary frequently recognise themselves in both descriptions. That is usually the rest of the chart talking. Someone born on the last day of Leo with several placements in Virgo will read as far more Virgoan than their Sun sign suggests.

If you want certainty, you need your birth date, birth time and birth place, and a chart calculation. Failing that, read both sign pages honestly — one of them will fit noticeably better, and that is not a bad proxy.

The Sun is not literally in the constellation Aries during Aries season, and has not been for around two thousand years. This is the most common objection to astrology and it rests on a misunderstanding of what the dates above are.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the equinoxes rather than to the stars. 0° Aries is defined as the spring equinox point — the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north — and the other eleven signs are measured from there in thirty-degree steps. It is a map of the seasons, not of the constellations, and it was designed that way.

The Earth's axis wobbles over a roughly 26,000-year cycle, so the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars by about one degree every seventy-two years. The constellations have consequently slipped about a sign away from the tropical divisions. The star-anchored alternative does exist: it is the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, which currently runs about 24 degrees behind the tropical one and subdivides the sky further into the 27 nakshatras. Both systems are internally consistent. They are answering different questions.
