Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn

Modality — sometimes called quadruplicity or quality — is the second axis of the zodiac, and it is the one most people skip. Element tells you what a sign runs on. Modality tells you where in a cycle it operates, and that is often the better predictor of how someone actually behaves day to day.

The scheme is tied to the seasons and is not arbitrary. Each season is divided in three: a sign that opens it, a sign that holds its middle, and a sign that closes it and hands over. The four cardinal signs sit exactly at the turning points of the year. In the northern hemisphere the spring equinox falls at 0° Aries, the summer solstice at 0° Cancer, the autumn equinox at 0° Libra and the winter solstice at 0° Capricorn. These are the four moments the light measurably changes direction.

That is the whole meaning of cardinal: the point where something turns. A cardinal sign is at its most natural when a situation needs to be started, redirected or decided. Give one a settled arrangement and they will find something in it to reorganise.

All four initiate; the element decides what they initiate.

• Aries — cardinal fire. Initiates action. Moves first and works out the details in motion. The most visible and least patient of the four.
• Cancer — cardinal water. Initiates care. Cancer's leadership is protective rather than directive — it forms the group, feeds it and defends it. Easy to underestimate, because it does not look like ambition.
• Libra — cardinal air. Initiates contact. Libra starts relationships and negotiations and sets the terms of the conversation. The velvet-glove version of the same drive; conflict-averse and quietly directive.
• Capricorn — cardinal earth. Initiates structure. Capricorn founds the thing that will still exist in twenty years and accepts the cost of running it. Slowest to move and hardest to divert once moving.

The four cardinal signs sit at 90 and 180 degrees to one another — squares and oppositions, the two hardest angles in astrology. Aries opposes Libra, Cancer opposes Capricorn, and every other combination among the four is a square. This is not coincidence: signs of the same modality are always in hard aspect, and signs of the same element are always in easy aspect.

In practice this means two cardinal signs together are two people who both want to decide. The arguments are rarely about the topic; they are about whose initiative the situation is. It is also why those pairings are so common and so productive — a Capricorn and a Cancer building a household, an Aries and a Libra running a business — since both bring genuine drive and neither is waiting for permission.

Cardinal signs are founders, department heads and the people who volunteer to fix the broken process. The strength is genuine: someone has to decide, and these four will, sometimes before anyone asked them to.

The cost is that starting is not finishing. A cardinal sign with no fixed or mutable support behind them accumulates half-built initiatives. The most useful working pairing on the whole wheel is a cardinal sign who starts, a fixed sign who sustains and a mutable sign who adapts it when the ground shifts — which is exactly what a season is.
