The layout, position by position
- 11 — You in this relationshipNot who you are generally, but who you become in this particular connection. The two are often startlingly different.
- 22 — Them in this relationshipHow the other person is showing up here, as far as it is visible from your side. Read it as behaviour, not as a diagnosis of their soul.
- 33 — What is actually between youThe dynamic itself: the thing that exists in the gap and belongs to neither of you alone. Usually the most informative card in the spread.
- 44 — What is in the wayThe obstacle. Frequently something structural (timing, distance, an old pattern) rather than a fault in either person.
- 55 — Where it goes from hereThe direction of travel if neither of you changes anything. A trajectory, not a verdict.
How to deal it
Deal cards one and two side by side, card three between and below them, card four above the pair, and card five at the top. The shape matters less than keeping cards one and two visually separate, the reading depends on being able to see your side and their side as distinct.
Ask an open question before you shuffle. "What is really going on between us?" or "What am I not seeing about this?" both work. "Does he love me?" does not, and the reason is in the next section.
What a love reading can and cannot tell you
The honest limit: a tarot spread has no access to another person's feelings. Card two describes how they are behaving in the relationship as you have experienced it, filtered through your own attention. That is genuinely useful, it is the thing you keep explaining away, but it is not a readout of their heart.
What the spread does well is name the dynamic. Card three regularly says something neither person would have said out loud: that the relationship runs on rescue, or on performance, or on waiting. Card four does the same for the obstacle, and it very often lands on something neither of you caused.
The practical rule: use this spread to decide what you want to do, not to decide what they feel. Every reading that goes badly wrong is one where those two got swapped.
Reading it for different situations
A new relationship. Cards one and two carry the most weight, early on, the dynamic in card three has not formed yet, and a vague card there is information rather than a failure.
A long relationship. Card three dominates and cards one and two often surprise. Long partnerships develop a shape of their own that neither person chose, and this spread is unusually good at naming it.
Someone you are not with. Card four is the one to read carefully, with unavailable or distant people it typically names the structural reason, and readers typically skip past it to card five.
An ex. Read card five as "where this thread in you is heading" rather than "whether they come back". The spread cannot see them any more; it can see what you are still carrying.
Individual cards carry their own love readings too, every one of the 78 card meanings covers what the card says about relationships specifically. If the question is really about long-term fit between two people, zodiac compatibility approaches it from a different direction.
Questions to avoid
"Will they come back?": closed, unanswerable, and the source of most repeat pulls. Ask what is unfinished instead.
"Who is my soulmate?", the deck has no names in it. Ask what you are looking for and why it has been hard to find.
"Are they cheating?", a reading cannot establish a fact about the world, and the answer you want from the cards is not evidence. That is a conversation, not a spread.
Any question you have already asked this week. Re-asking until the cards soften is the fastest way to make a reading meaningless.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tarot spread for love?
A five-card layout covering you, them, the dynamic between you, the obstacle and the direction. It is small enough to read clearly and structured enough to separate your side from theirs, which is where love readings usually go wrong.
Can tarot tell me if someone loves me?
No. The cards can describe how the other person has been behaving as you experienced it, and what the dynamic between you looks like, but they have no access to another person's feelings. Use the reading to decide what you want to do.
Which card position shows the other person?
Card two. Read it as how they are showing up in this relationship rather than as a verdict on their character, behaviour is what the spread can actually see.
Can I use this spread for an ex?
Yes, but read the final card as where your side of it is heading rather than whether they return. What is still unresolved in you is the part the spread can genuinely speak to.
How often should I do a love reading?
Rarely: once a situation has actually changed, not once a week and not twice in a day. Repeat pulls on an unchanged relationship produce contradictory readings and erode your trust in all of them.
